November 9, 1947 January 29, 2021** Stephen Craig Small passed away peacefully after a life of happiness and joy surrounded by his family.
Steve graduated from Moreno Valley High School and studied accounting and electrical engineering, earning an associate of arts degree. He was a voracious reader and a life-long student. After high school, Steve enlisted in the US Navy. He was stationed in Hawaii, Alaska and did a tour in Vietnam. He served on an aircraft carrier and acted as an S4 supply officer at the Hawaii, Vietnam, and Alaskan bases. After the US Navy, he worked in the trailer factory industry where he assisted the work force in union negotiations. He was a volunteer for the Easter Seals Society and lived as a caregiver for his quadriplegic brother for more than a year. Eventually, Steve went into the car dealership world as a car salesman, but gradually moved into the service department arena where he served at Moss Motors in Riverside as a manager in the service department. Steve moved with his family to Redlands in 1986 after accepting the position of Service Manager at Redlands Dodge. In 2007, he retired from Fairview Ford in San Bernardino where he had worked as a Service Advisor for more than 10 years.
Steve is survived by his wife Pattie, and seven children - Edward, Thomas, Kristin, Catherine, Stephen, Jason, and Sabrina; two sons-in law - James Hanson and Kyle Husband; four daughters-in-law - Christina, Deborah, Cindy, and Samantha; twelve grandchildren - Madison, Matthew, Isaac, Kyla, Michael, Kristina, Noah, Sebastian, Trinity, Tomas, Sarra, and Vanesa; four nephews Gordon, John, Brien and Michael; two nieces -Victoria and Tina; as well as more than 10 great-nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his brothers David and Richard.
In 1983, Steve began supporting youth soccer with his son Edward (Ted) in AYSO and in USYSA. He continued with soccer earning a "D" coaches license from the United States Soccer Federation. He coached in the Los Gauchos Soccer Club organization as well as the Corinthians Soccer Club and the Yucaipa Youth Soccer Association. Steve enjoyed home improvement projects and laid tile in many rooms of his house as well as wood flooring for his house and friends homes as well.
Steve and Pattie loved to travel together, for example they traveled to England alongside their son Ted in late 1999. More recently, Steve and Pattie traveled to Bryce Canyon, Crater Lake, Grand Canyon, Lincoln Memorial, National Mall and Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Pearl Harbor, Zion, Redwood, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and to Alaska and Hawaii on cruises.
A memorial service will be held in March, by invitation only.
