Redlands

Richard Fong passed away peacefully at age 96 in Redlands, CA on May 12, 2025. Known to all by his nickname Dick, he was a loving husband to his wife of 68 years, Bea, and a devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by Bea and immediate family members Jon and Ling, David, Michael, Jun, Caroline, Joli, and Kit, and by an extensive extended family.

Dick lived in Redlands since 2022. Before then he lived in Oakland, CA for nearly 60 years. Prior homes included San Francisco, CA and Ely, NV where he was a proud graduate of White Pine County High School. Dick served in the US Air Force and later had a 35-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring as the Manager of the ARTS Field Office at Bay TRACON. Dick and Bea were among the founding members of the Oakland Soccer Club. Dick and Bea also found time to travel across the US and Canada, and also visited China, Japan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, England, the Netherlands, and France. Maui was a frequent and relaxing destination for them.

Besides his family, Dick’s great joys in life were gardening, fixing things, and desserts. Nieces and nephews remember him for his “Uncle Dick sweater” knitted by Bea. Family and friends were often the recipients of his sweet pea flowers and home-grown fruits and vegetables. He was famous at family parties for his applesauce, apple galette, peeled grapefruit, and smoked turkey. Dick had a big heart and he will be missed.
