James "Jim" Patrick Caley, D.D.S, a Redlands dentist of 33 years, Highland resident, and loving husband and father, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at his home in Highland, CA. He was 64.
Born in Chicago on May 23, 1956 to James and Marie Caley, Jim was the eldest of three children. He attended Bellarmine Jesuit high school in San Jose, California, graduating in 1974. He then attended the University of Arizona, where he majored in biology and belonged to the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, where he developed and maintained lifelong friendships.
In his early 20s, Jim worked at the El Torito Restaurant in Tucson, Arizona, beginning as a waiter but quickly working his way up the ladder to manager, training employees to open restaurants in new locations.
Jim married the love of his life, Barbara, and the two moved to Loma Linda, where Jim decided to pursue a career in dentistry. He attended Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, graduating in 1987 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery, or DDS, degree. Upon graduation, Jim immediately began his dental anesthesia residency program, earning his certificate in 1989. He then purchased his own practice, University Dental Group of Redlands, where he practiced for 31 years. Many of his patients became good friends and were more like family.
On May 23, 1997, his son, Wyatt, was born. Wyatt was the second "love of his life", and Jim took great pride in the fact he and his son Wyatt shared the same birthday.
Jim was also very active in his community and had a variety of interests. He loved to travel, and he and his family would vacation in Hawaii annually. Jim also enjoyed fishing, investing and day trading, trap shooting, real estate development, scuba diving, automobile collecting, fine dining, daily walks, going to concerts, collecting antiques, and attending local fundraisers where he generously supported his community. He also took great pride in earning his belts in Tae Kwon Do.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Jim was a member of the Shamrock Club of San Bernardino, where he served as Chief Leprechaun in 2012.
Being involved and giving back to the community was a passion Jim shared and instilled in his son Wyatt. For many years, Jim and Wyatt raised money by selling mistletoe every Christmas season, donating all of the proceeds to the Loma Linda Childrens Hospital.
In 2012 and 2013, Jim spearheaded Pull for the Kids, a charitable trap shooting event that raised money for Loma Linda Childrens Hospital.
Jim will forever be loved and remembered for his zest for life, quick wit, great intellect, incredible sense of humor, and extremely generous nature to his beloved family, friends and community. He was a wonderful and loyal friend to all, and he will be painfully missed.
Jim is survived by his wife of 35 years, Barbara, his son, Wyatt, daughter Belinda, of Oregon, sister Julie, of Idaho, brother John, of Idaho and a multitude of friends.
