After nearly 96 years on this earth and a legacy of service, Harold Lee
Hastain passed away in his home that he loved, in Redlands, California on July
3, 2026. Harold was born in Clinton, Missouri, to Harold Hawkins Hastain and
Nellie Cockrell Hastain, where he grew up with his sister, Jean Marsh. After
receiving a master’s degree in Government from California State University –
Los Angeles, Harold spent his entire career in the service of law enforcement:
over 27+ years with the Los Angeles Police Department; 2+ years at Edward Air
Force Base as Head of Security; and 18 years with the Orange County Sheriff’s
Department as a Courtroom Marshall. He also proudly served this country
that he loved in the United States Air Force.
Harold met and then married his sweetheart of 70 years, Barbara Jean
Robinson Hastain on May 5,1956 in San Gabriel, California. They raised their
family in Baldwin Park, California, where they also became members of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where Harold served in Boy
Scouts, the young men’s organization and various leadership capacities
throughout his life.
Harold and Barbara purchased their dream home, a beautiful Victorian
house in Redlands, California, in 1991. Harold believed in hard work and
exercise and demonstrated this in his commitment to running and
weightlifting, his career, military service, church service and in his own home.
He dug his own swimming pool by hand, took care of his orange grove,
performed all of his own yard work, and tended to the never-ending repairs,
maintenance and special projects in his old Victorian home and large
property. But even with all of this, he made time to help and teach friends and
neighbors to work hard right alongside him.
Harold was also an avid collector of many things in his life, and loved
sharing his train sets, antiques, antique music boxes, a John Deere tractor, 56
T-bird, International Truck, Model T, Model A, and so much more, yet he could
also be seen accompanying Barbara at Doll Shows and clubs all over
California. Harold could be described as a “tough old bird,” and he could also
be described as a “teddy bear.”
Harold is survived by his wife, Barbara, son, Brian (Daunine), daughter,
Nanette Bounty (Larry), 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is
also survived by his sister, Jean Marsh. Sadly, Harold was preceded in death
by his daughter, Denise Lynn Browne, in 2025, and his foster son, Danny
Ringlero, in 2021.
A celebration of his legacy and life will be held on July 23, 2026 at 11:00
a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 640 South
Center Street, in Redlands, California.
