Duane Keith Carney, 80, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026. He was born on April 17, 1945, in Poynette, Wisconsin.
Duane proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed aboard the USS Ranger. In 1968, he met the love of his life, Barbara Eagleberger, and they were married the following year, making their home in Yucaipa, California. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love and family.
After his discharge from the Navy, Duane continued his dedication to service through his work with the U.S. Forest Service and later with Richmond Technology. He was a man of many passions, including running, woodworking, and a lifelong fascination with space.
Duane was affectionately known as “Papa Carney” to many, a title he earned through his years of volunteering with the Yucaipa High School Cross Country team, coached by his son, Jason. His presence and encouragement left a lasting impact on countless young athletes.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Carney; his son, Jason Carney (Kerry); and his grandson, Jared Carney. He is preceded in death by his youngest son, Nathan Carney; brother David Carney; and sisters, Darlene Moody and Diana Carney.
Duane will be remembered as a selfless and hardworking man who always gave more than was asked of him. He was kind-hearted, never judgmental, and treated everyone he met with respect and compassion. His legacy of generosity and quiet strength will live on in all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at Emmerson-Bartlett Memorial Chapel, 703 Brookside Avenue, Redlands, California.
Duane was privately interred at Riverside National Cemetery on April 14, 2026.
