William Sheridan Young

October 4, 1932 — September 10, 2017

Bill Young was one of those rare Redlands natives who seemed to know everyone in town.  Born the second child of Mary and Stanley S. Young on October 4, 1932, he passed from this life on Sunday, September 10, at his home in Redlands with his family by his side.
He lived all his life in Redlands except for the time of service in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Alameda, CA, and the first two years of his 61-year marriage to Doris Woodring Young when they lived in Palm Springs. His education was entirely in Redlands, beginning at Franklin Elementary School, then Redlands Junior High, and finally Redlands High School, graduating with the class of 1950. He was very proud of the fact that his five grandchildren were 4th generation RHS graduates. “The Long Blue Line” ran deep for the Young family.
As a student he excelled in sports, obtaining varsity letters in basketball, track and baseball.  He continued throughout his life to be a loyal and devoted supporter of Redlands High School athletics. He rarely ever missed a game whether it was watching his daughter and granddaughter cheerlead or his grandsons play soccer, football, basketball and baseball. He especially enjoyed watching his son-in-law, Greg Rude, coach basketball and will be greatly missed in the stands at Terrier Gym.
From an early age, Bill had a love of classic cars.  He enjoyed going to car shows, telling stories about all the old cars he used to own, and driving around town in his ‘59 Ford Ranchero.
Bill was a longtime businessman who owned many gas stations and mini-marts throughout Redlands, Mentone, Loma Linda, and Palm Springs. His customers were loyal, life-long friends who appreciated the “full service” he provided back then. He retired from the service station business and became owner-manager of apartments on Brookside Ave. He enjoyed this job and thought of his tenants as a second family.
In his passing, Bill is survived by his wife Doris, their two daughters, Wendi Darwin and Leslie Rude, and son-in-law Gregory Rude. Also, his five grandchildren, Max Rude, Cameron Rude, Jillian Darwin, Georgia Darwin and Liam Darwin; his sister Mary Jo Young, brother-in-law Bill Woodring, and wife Jean, sister-in-law Norma Williams, and nieces and nephews. Bill considered himself a rich man because he had the love of a family who adored him with their whole hearts, something the wealthiest of men could not buy. He has left a huge, empty space in the wide circle of family and friends and will be missed greatly.
His funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Redlands on Saturday, September 23rd at two o’clock, with a viewing beginning at one o’clock. We hope all that knew and loved him can attend.  Bill will be buried at the Hillside Cemetery in Redlands during a private ceremony.
