Marilyn Smutny Jacobs

June 7, 1940 — June 8, 2018

Marilyn Ann Smutny was born June 7, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to George and Marjorie Smutny.  After Living in Wisconsin and Minnesota, the family settled in Kansas City, Missouri.
Marilyn graduated from Southwest High School, then entered the University of Colorado at Boulder. There, she met Mike Jacobs, who she would date and become engaged to marry. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Mike’s commissioning as a Lieutenant in the Air Force, they married. Moving to Georgia for Mike’s Pilot Training was the first of their many adventures.
Marilyn guided the Jacobs household through 23 years of Air Force life and the birth of 5 daughters in Georgia, New Mexico, Kansas, Texas, New York, and finally, California. During this time, she started to fulfill her unequaled thirst for volunteer work. Working with the Girl Scouts as a Troop Leader, Area Organizer, Planner and Day Camp Manager, she provided nearly 50 years of leadership and guidance. She initiated a series of trips for girls to expand their world view and familiarize them with new places – Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Russia.
To help ensure that the school system was being supported for the students’ needs, she immersed herself in PTA, becoming a strong role model for parents and students alike. She served as President and/or Board member at all of her children’s schools. An avid bowler, Marilyn devoted many hours to perfecting her sport and supporting her many leagues, serving as Secretary and President several times during a 30-year span.
Marilyn and Mike were married over 55 years and looked forward to many more. Unfortunately, Marilyn was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and, after a very short time under Hospice care, passed away quietly on the evening of June 8 surrounded by her daughters and several grandchildren.
Left to miss her are: Mike, her husband, daughters Diana (Rob) McCluskey, Jennifer (Dan) Judelson, Sarah (Fabio) De Almeida, and Melissa (Michael) Pitcher, as well as grandsons Andrew McCluskey, Leon Baham and granddaughters Noel Baham, Ryan and Kira Judelson, and Kenny and Harper Pitcher. Her daughter Karen preceded her in death.
Marilyn will be interred in a private ceremony on June 26 at the Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions I her name to the American Cancer Society.
