Joseph Orville Young

April 4, 1932 — November 10, 2011

Joseph Orville Young, M.D., 79, passed away Thursday, Nov. 10 at Redlands Community Hospital from respiratory failure and pneumonia. He was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1932 to Agnes and Noah Young. He graduated from Duluth High School before attending the University of Minnesota for his undergraduate work and medical school. He served in the U.S. Air Force after medical school, being stationed in Oahu at Tripler Army General Hospital and rotating to posts in Texas and Georgia before finishing his residency in Minneapolis. He was in private practice in Redlands and Beaumont as an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) between 1964 and his retirement in 1996. In addition, he had served on staff at Redlands Community and San Gorgonio Hospitals. He was a longstanding member of the Redlands Optimist Club and the BPOE, with membership in the Redlands and later in the San Bernardino Elks. He enjoyed playing pangini, golf, remodeling old houses and carpentry. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; a son, Andrew, of Highland; three daughters, Laura, of McCleary, Washington; Jennifer Lawson, of Norco; and Katherine, of Riverside; two step-sons, Dennis Lawrence, of Yucaipa; and Gary Lawrence, of Arrowbear; two sisters, Bonnie Schilling, of Duluth, Minnesota; and Nancy, of Bothell, Washington; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
