Harvey Dean Glasgow, Sr.

July 15, 1934 — September 9, 2019

Harvey D. Glasgow Sr., age 85, from Redlands, CA
Passed away September 9, 2019
Beloved husband, father and grandfather
Harveys great satisfaction was working as a Los Angeles City Firefighter. In fact, he expressed wonder that a kid who delivered newspapers in a small town in Nebraska was now a member of the number one fire department in the US. He joined the LAFD in 1958, with his first assignment at Station 11, and thoroughly enjoyed the nickname of Slim that his fellow fighters started calling him. His experience grew as he moved among several other specialty fire stations. His leadership and knowledge were admired by his fellow workers, and he used these attributions to achieve Captain II rank.
Although he experienced great fulfillment as an integral part of the team to contain fire emergencies, Harvey best loved to teach. He last served in the Medical Liaison Department, where he truly thrived. One of his assignments was teaching safety classes at an elementary school nearby. He saw positive responses from the students, and was very disappointed when the program was discontinued. Harvey reluctantly retired from this position in 1978 due to injuries suffered on the job. Although he was saddened to leave the LAFD, and especially his fellow Firefighters, he was happy to have been a part of the department.
In the mid-80s, missing the adventure of the Fire Department, Harvey accepted a position as a Fire Safety consultant at the new Riyadh International Airport in Saudi Arabia. He maintained that position for nearly two years, and felt he had made a positive contribution to the airport project.
While in Saudi Arabia, Harvey and his wife Teri, drove to Dammam on the East coast to see the Arabian Sea. They were awed by the mountains of shifting sand along the highway to the coast. They also flew to the West coast to visit the ancient city of Jeddah where they stood on the banks of the Red Sea. Several other exciting trips were taken to Greece, Germany and Japan.
Throughout his life, Harvey enjoyed camping with his family as often as possible, spending many summer vacations camping in the high Sierra mountains among the Redwoods. The family hiked in the woods and meadows to the lakes and streams, for quick dips in the freezing mountain water. Many meals were fresh caught trout cooked over the camp fire in an old cast iron skillet. Evenings were spent around the campfire under velvet starlit skies, while roasting marshmallow smores.
Fishing trips with buddies from the fire department were always of great enjoyment for Harvey. Nearly every year, he joined them in camping trips to fish at Crowley Lake, or on longer trips for deep sea fishing off the coast of Oregon or Washington for tuna and salmon. The greatest part of these adventures was the fellowship with his friends.
In the early years on the fire department, Harvey took his turn at cooking for the station. He began to enjoy this task and learned to prepare specialties from the real chefs of the fire house. Harvey became the family BBQ King. He had a great reputation making Harvey burgers and large platters of ribs and steaks. After retirement he expanded his culinary expertise into cooking and baking. Before Thanksgiving every year, Harvey baked dozens of small special five-nut cakes for family and friends. His wife took them to share at the hospital where she worked. For Christmas, he got out his marble slab for pouring out a variety of nut brittle. Harveys reputation as the family chef continued throughout his life.
In the early 80s, Harvey and Teri moved to Walla Walla for three years for her to attend nursing school. While there, Harvey grew a very large garden. They froze, dried, canned, juiced and pickled the various vegetables and fruits they produced. They also ground flour to make fresh bread from the grains that were grown near them.
Later in life, Harvey and Teri made memories on road-trips in their motor home. While Harvey drove, she co-piloted their way across the country, visiting friends and extended family along the way. They finally settled in Redlands, CA near their children and grandchildren, to participate in their lives.
During the last few years of his life, Harvey was severely disabled from back injuries and other medical conditions. Harvey is survived by Teri, his wife of 67 years, daughter Robin, sons Harvey Jr. and Brian, grandchildren Philip, Christopher, Keston, Nichole and Taylor, and his sister Bess, as well as cousins, nephews and nieces.
Harvey will be missed immensely.
