Delilah Ann Dee Cupples

February 9, 1925 — January 29, 2011

Delilah "Dee" Ann Cupples Born in Fresno, Ca on February 9, 1925 to Adolphus M DeWitt and Grace M DeWitt, the 3rd of 11 children. Survived by two brothers and two sisters: Frances Scelzi of St. George, Ut; Arthur DeWitt of Fresno, Ca; Richard DeWitt of Clovis, Ca; Rebecca Hackey of Clovis, CA. She is also survived by her step daughters Jane Duran Alvarez of Nevada and Jean Athey of Avila Beach, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband Claude C Cupples and her son Desmond F Sweeney, Jr. Dee graduated in 1942 from Clovis Union High School where she was active in drama and choir. Her one son , Desmond "Denny" F. Sweeney Jr., was born May 27, 1943. After World War II ended she lived for a short time in the Bay Area before moving to Southern California. Dee was married to Claude Cupples for 42 years, until his death in May of 2010. They both worked for Fabricon Products, a laminate manufacturing facility in the City of Commerce. Dee was the payroll clerk for many years. During those years, Claude and Dee were part of a large and active square dance club. The members took many trips together around southern California to dance at other locations. They also joined an Airstream Trailer club and participated in many caravans all over the United States. After their retirement, they relocated from Montebello to Yucaipa to live in Yucaipa Land Yacht Harbor, )the Airstream is called a Land Yacht) where they and their many friends continued to travel together. Family was very important to Dee. She saw her brothers and sisters whenever she could, and made sure that holidays were spent with her son, Denny, and her step-daughters, Jane and Jean, and their families. Dee was a terrific and creative cook and loved sewing and quilting. She was an avid reader. Following a fall at her daughter Jean's house in December, during which her right hip was broken, she spent her last days at a rehab facility in San Luis Obispo, CA. She was visited twice a day by some combination of Jean, son in law Tom, grandchildren Lisa and Eric, and great grandchildren Justin, Kai, Zac, and Avila. Dee's other step-daughter, Jane, and her family in Nevada kept in close touch with Dee by phone, as did her brother and sister-in-law Art and Myrtle, in Fresno and her sister, Frances in Utah. Her nephew Ed and his wife Dawn traveled from Fresno to visit Dee twice while she was in re-hab. Her friends in Yucaipa also kept in touch with her by phone. She was uplifted by everyone's visits and her final weeks were happy ones. Complications from the broken hip finally overcame her and she passed away quietly at 3:50 AM on January 29th. Her step-daughter, Jean, was at her side during the final six hours of her life. Dee and her family have reunited in Heaven. Praise the Lord!
